Where Is My Transmission Fluid Leaking From?

admin • June 1, 2020

You’re running late! As always. You quickly pull out of the garage and move to press the button on the remote to close the garage door. You see something on the floor that stops your motion. You put your vehicle in park, get out of the car, and head into the garage. It’s fluid. You wipe your finger in it. It looks pink; probably transmission fluid. Where is it leaking from? Eagle Transmission frequently fixes fluid leaks from the following four locations.

1. Transmission Seals

Your car, truck, or SUV’s transmission is a complex array of parts. One of those parts is the seal. Transmission seals are made from metal or rubber and either material eventually breaks down. The seals take a lot of abuse from engine heat and vehicle vibration. One of the most common places you’ll find a transmission fluid leak is from the pan seal, which can crack over time.

2. Transmission Lines

As we mentioned in a previous blog post, transmission fluid works a lot like motor oil: it lubricates transmission parts and helps to keep the transmission cool. Transmission lines move the fluid throughout the system and like the pan seal, they can crack over time. These lines are manufactured from aluminum or steel, so they’re durable but not invincible.

3. Transmission Pump

The transmission pump also works hard to push transmission fluid through the system. If the pump’s body cracks, which it can do under the tremendous heat and vibration caused by a combustion engine, your vehicle will leak transmission fluid. This problem isn’t as common as you might think, but we have had to replace leaking transmission pumps in the past.

4. Poor Transmission Installation

If you’ve just had work done on your transmission or had to have a new one put in, the installation could be causing the leaks. The most common installation problem with transmissions is the pan. If the mechanic did not install and/or secure the pan properly, it might leak. We can check to make sure the pan is installed and secured tightly with the correct bolts.
